Computer Engineering, Software Engineering and Mechatronics

The main purpose of writing this article is to clarify engineering fields related to Computers. I receive numerous questions from my juniors and friends regarding the engineering fields. I will be discussing about Computer System Engineering, Software Engineering and Mechatronic Engineering (Mechatronics). Students often get confused in understanding the concepts about those fields. The mostly question that what do we actually study in such fields and what sort of work would we expert after graduation?

First of all, let us start from the simplest one i.e. Software Engineering. In today’s world, every child is familiar with what actually software is. It is the invisible part of computer that is installed in it in order to run the system, or it is a medium to command the hardware to perform an action. Different software applications are designed to perform different tasks. In Software Engineering, we do study how software is developed. Though, it is not as easy as I explained only in a sentence. We study about different computer languages like Java, C++, etc. and use them in developing the software.

Another thing to consider about software Engineering is that it is a vast field and can be divided into Computer Software Engineering, Android Engineering, etc.

Then it comes Computer System Engineering or just Computer Engineering. I would say it is a blend study of Software Engineering and Electrical Engineering. In this Engineering, students study mainly about the computer hardware, designing hard parts (including circuits) of computer and the connection between hardware and software of any system. Apart from designing hardware, students also study about making software. So, this field also covers Software Engineering as well.

Now, let us discuss about Mechatronic Engineering or simply Mechatronics. It is a blend of many other Engineering fields. It covers the studies of Electrical and Mechanical engineering mainly, and also that of Computer and Telecom Engineering. In simplest words, making robots and such sort of artificial intelligence involving products is one of the main goals of Mechatronic Engineering. Indeed, it is an interesting field and has very good scope in near future.
